Sentence Pattern

Assalammualaikum. .:D

Hye everyone!! Today i want to share to you all about sentence patterns.

There are 7 basic sentence patterns
1. Subject + Verb (Intransitive Verb)
2. Subject + Verb + Object
3. Subject + Verb + Adverbial (Place or Time)
4. Subject + Verb + Complement (Noun or Adjective)
5. Subject + Verb + Object + Object
6. Subject + Verb + Object + Complement (Noun or Adjective)
7. Subject + Verb + Object + Adverbial (Time or Place)


1. Subject + Verb (Intransitive Verb)
#Intransitive verb = Verb that can stand on its own

example : They(Subject) arrived(verb)

#The subject may be a noun, noun phrase or pronoun.



2. Subject + Verb + Object (Direct)
#Direct object is a receiver of the action of the verb

example : The people(Subject) supported(Verb) the Government(Direct Object)



3. Subject + Verb + Adverbial (Place or Time)
#Verb in this pattern can be of any form of "be" such as "is,are,was,were,has been,had been"
#Adverbial can be a noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase, or adverb. It also describe the WH-Question (when,where,why,how).

example : Rosman(Subject) is(Verb) at the class(Adverbial of Place)

                  Isma(Subject) has(Verb) been here before(Adverbial of time)



4. Subject + Verb + Complement (Noun or Adjective)
#Subject is a noun or noun phrase.
#Complement in this pattern is a Subject Complement.
#it is a noun phrase or an adjective that follows the verb( Acts as a linking verb )
#The complement describes the subject in the sentence.

example : Madam Lee(Subject) was(Linking Verb) my favourite teacher(Subject Complement).
~ my favourite teacher is refers back to the subject.

#Additional knowledge
- The be-verb in the English language has eight forms : am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being
- The Linking Verb is a verb that does not show action but instead describes someone or something. Other linking verb  are become, remain, seem, appear, prove, grow, turn, etc.



5. Subject + Verb(Transitive) + Object + Object
# Verb in this pattern is followed by a direct object and indirect object.
# Usually the pattern is S+VT+IO+DO

example : 

Rosman(Subject) gave(Transitive Verb) all his friends(Indirect Object) a Cadbury(Direct Object)

Remember : Direct Object is receiver of the action.


6. Subject + Verb(Transitive) + Object(Direct) + Complement (Noun or Adjective)
#Complement in this pattern is a Object Complement
#Object Complement is used to modify or rename the object in a sentence.

example : We(Subject) elected(Transitive verb) Rosman (Direct Object) our class monitor(Object Complement)

# "our class monitor" in the sentence describe the "Rosman".


7. Subject + Verb + Object(Direct) + Adverbial (Time or Place)
#Adverbial is added after the Direct Object.

example : 
My mother(Subject) is baking(Verb) cakes(Direct Object) in the kitchen(Adverbial of place).

My mother(Subject) is baking(Verb) cakes(Direct Object) every evening(Adverbial of time).

#Preposition should be use before adverbial place and time.
